Henry W. Davis

CANFIELD - Services will be held on Saturday June 17, 2017, at 10:00 AM at The Martin Luther Lutheran Church for Henry W. Davis, 96 also of St. Petersburg, FL, who passed away peacefully on June 8 from complications of congestive heart failure.

Born September 6, 1920, a son of J. Howard and Katherine Kurz Davis, he was a graduate of South High School in 1939. He enrolled that Fall at Ohio University and was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. As part of the Greatest Generation, he left school after his second year and enlisted in the United States Army. During World War II he served honorably in the Pacific Arena. Upon return from the war, he completed his bachelor’s degree at OU in business administration.

He married the love of his life, Ruth M. Davies on August 2, 1947 at Martin Luther Lutheran church where both were baptized and confirmed. He entered law school in 1951 at Youngstown College while working in sales at General Fireproofing. He passed the bar in 1955 and entered private practice retiring in 2003. The last 24 years of his practice were shared in partnership with his son James. He was honored for 60 years as a member of the bar in 2015.

He was a member of the Ohio State Bar Association, the Mahoning County Bar Association and served on the board of directors of Ohio Bar Title Insurance Company. He was a life member of Martin Luther Lutheran Church and served as President of the congregation as well as many terms on church council. He is a past president of the Organization of Protestant Men.

Together with his wife of 67 years, they raised three children and were so proud of the fact that all of his children and grandchildren graduated from college, many of them earning masters and doctorates.

Henry is survived by two sons, Dr. John E. Davis (Judy) and Atty. James H. Davis; a son-in-law Ed Spatholt (Elizabeth); a daughter-in-law Beverly Davis; eight grandchildren, Dr. Katherine J. Davis, James P. Davis (Sara Jane), Dr. Casey B. Davis, Matthew Spatholt (Lindsey), John Spatholt (Julie), Dr. Adam Davis (Andrea), Atty. Andrew Davis (Sarah) and Lisl Davis; and five great grandchildren, Alder and Will Davis, Amelia and Henry Davis and Brody Spatholt.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his loving wife, Ruth M. Davis, who passed away March 13, 2015, a sister, Eleanor Kershner Bieber and his beloved daughter

Cathy L. Spatholt.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Saturday. Burial will take place at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.
