Helen L. Turnbull

Poland - Helen L. Turnbull, 83, of Poland, Ohio, died December 30, 2010 at her residence with her family at her side.

Mrs. Turnbull was born March 25, 1927 in Boardman, a daughter of William and Grace Eyster Smith, and was a lifelong area resident.

She was a 1945 graduate of Ursuline High School. While attending high school, she worked at McKelvey's Department Store. Following high school, she went to beauty school and obtained Cosmetology and Manager Licenses. After she got married, she worked for her father-in-law at his florist shop for a short period of time.

Mrs. Turnbull was a member of the Holy Family Church, where she was past president of the Altar Guild, she chaired the fish fries during lent, and Kolachi committee. She had helped with the CCD classes; she also was a member of the church's bereavement committee and widows group. Mrs. Turnbull also was a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader. She had served as a board member of Eastern Mental Health, a non-parent board member of the Mahoning County Council for Mentally Challenged Citizens, then became an honorary board member. She was a member of the Ursuline green and gold girls. Mrs. Turnbull was a long time member of Club South, where she formed friendships with other women of the Arthritic Swim class. These women became known as the Mermaids and met socially each month. She loved to cook and bake and was known for her banana bread and pizzelles. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family.

Her husband of 57 years, Donald E. Turnbull, whom she married July 22, 1950, died February 22, 2008.

She is survived by a son, Donald W. Turnbull and a daughter, Janice A. Turnbull both of Youngstown; two sisters, Annabelle Yeaney of Mayport, PA, and Barbara (Joseph) Carothers of Boardman; five brothers, Thomas (Cay) Smith of Lake Geneva, WI, Carroll (Marilynn) Smith of Boardman, Howard (Carol) Smith of Elkhorn, NE, Donald (Carol) Smith and John (Shaun) Smith both of Santa Ana, CA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Wilma Smith and her brother, William Smith.

Family and friends will be received Monday from 4-7 at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland, where prayer services will be held Tuesday at 9:15 am. A Funeral Mass will be Tuesday at 10:00 am at the Holy Family Church in Poland. Entombment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
