POLAND - Helen M. Slagle, 93, formerly of New Middletown, died Sunday Jan. 8, 2012, at Woodlands Assisted Living.
Helen was born June 28, 1918, in New Middletown, a daughter of Joseph and Lillian Johnson Kauffman.
She was a 1937 Springfield High School graduate and went on to work in sales at Strouss' Department Store for 22 years, before retiring in 1979.
She was a lifelong member of the Zion Lutheran Church of New Middletown, where she was a member of the choir since high school and the seniors group.
Helen was also a member of the Saxon Club and its seniors group as well as the Springfield Township Seniors Group. She was an excellent bowler, having belonged to various leagues at Camelot and Holiday Bowl.
She loved her nieces and nephews and also loved gardening and playing cards with friends.
She is survived by her husband, Edward F. Slagle, whom she married Sept. 13, 1941; three nieces, Susan (Charles) Mohn of New Middletown, Irene (Larry) Swantek of New Middletown, and Theresa Barutcievich of North Carolina; and three nephews, Talcott (Greta) Kauffman Jr. of Columbiana, Virgil Kauffman Jr. of North Carolina, and Paul (Jackie) Kauffman of Beaver, Pa.; and several great-nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Helen was preceded in death by three brothers, Virgil Kauffman Sr., Talcott Kauffman Sr., and Kenneth Kauffman; and a great-nephew, Eric Kauffman.
Services will be held at the Zion Lutheran Church of New Middleton, Wednesday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Larry Klinker officiating. Interment will follow at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
Friends will be received Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, Poland and Wednesday from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at the church.
