North Lima - Helen Jakubek, 93, formerly of Poland, died Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at Assumption Village.
Mrs. Jakubek was born July 6, 1918 in Youngstown, a daughter of John and Helen (Solomon) Wolfe.
She was a 1936 graduate of Struthers High School and attended Kent State Salem Branch. During World War II, she worked as welder. For over 25 years, Mrs. Jakubek worked in occupational therapy for Park View Counseling and Woodside Receiving Hospital. In 1978, she started the first adult group home for the chronic mentally ill in Youngstown called the Jakubek Boarding Home. She later opened another in Niles, Southview Manor, which she owned and operated, until retiring at the age of 78.
She was a member of Infant Jesus of Prague Byzantine Catholic Church in Boardman and the Eagles in Struthers. Mrs. Jakubek was a talented seamstress, once sewing for Charlie Chaplin, and enjoyed ceramics, making hand woven baskets, and traveling all over the world.
She is survived by two daughters, Sylvia (Robert) Jacobs of New Middletown and Christine (Gerald) VanNatta of Toledo; son, John Jakubek of Canfield; two sisters, Martha Minchin of Struthers and Elizabeth Meredith of Wilmington, CA; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Andrew Wolfe; and three sisters, Mary Stanfar, Emma Ceplice, and Ann Solar.
A Panachida service will be held Friday at 12:15 p.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland, followed by a Divine Liturgy at 1 p.m. at Infant Jesus of Prague Byzantine Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Lake Park Cemetery.
Family and friends will be received Friday from 11 a.m.-12:15 p.m. at the funeral home.
The family suggests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions in Mrs. Jakubek's name to Antonine Sisters Adult Day Care, 2675 Lipkey Road, North Jackson 44451.
