Struthers - Helen Ruth Hassay, 89, died Wednesday afternoon, March 5, 2014 at Shepherd of the Valley in Niles.
Mrs. Hassay was born August 18, 1924 in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Joseph and Annie Kocur Granchie.
She was a 1943 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and worked as a bookkeeper for R.C. Organ for 23 years and retired in 1990 from Brevini after 12 years of service.
She was a member of Christ Our Savior Parish at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Struthers. Mrs. Hassay was also a member of the National Slovak Society and Slovak Catholic Sokols. Helen was active in the Band Boosters when her children were growing up.
In her free time, she enjoyed crafts, sewing, crocheting, knitting, baking, and especially trying her luck on the machines at Mountaineer Casino.
She leaves her husband, Frank E. Hassay, whom she married April 3, 1948; three daughters, Paula (Bob) Leon of Warren, Helene Firlik of Bedford, TX, and Frances "Chickie" (Dave) Moorhead of Solon; sister, Ann (James) Ribicic of California; six grandchildren, Adrianne Leon of Charlotte, NC, Robert Leon of Houston, TX, Megan Firlik of Bedford, TX, Joe (Susan) Moorhead of Brecksville, Tiffany (Adam) Scavone of New York, NY, and Hillary (Dan) Morrison of Chicago.
In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by sisters, Margaret (Stephen) Beney and Chris (Michael) Onda; and brothers, Albert and Joe Granchie.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, 250 N. Bridge St., Struthers. Inurnment will be at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery.
Family and friends will be received Saturday from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m. at the church, prior to the Mass.
Helen's family would like to express their appreciation and thank Shepherd of the Valley in Niles for the loving support and care they gave to her, especially Cheryl Grove, with whom Helen had a special bond.
