He served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954 as a member of the 226 Ordinance Division Depot in Pusan, South Korea. Harry was honorably discharged on September 13, 1954 and had earned the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, the Korea Service Ribbon, National Defense Medal, and the United Nations Service Medal.
After leaving the Army, he attended Youngstown College under the G.I. Bill and received a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from the Williamson School of Business in 1961. Harry earned his living in hospital purchasing, serving as a Director of Purchasing in hospital systems throughout Ohio, Pennsylvania and Minnesota. A sharp eye for detail and the importance of finding the best price ensured his illustrious career. Harry enjoyed the outdoors, bicycling, and camping; hobbies he shared with his children and grandchildren. He was a loyal fan of the Cleveland Browns and Indians. Harry was a member of the Poland Presbyterian Church. Purchasing came naturally to Harry; he loved shopping for the best bargains from groceries to cars. His last great negotiation was purchasing a red convertible this past fall, working a "deal" gave him much pleasure. He had a great sense of humor and his kindness drew people to him. He quickly and easily turned strangers into friends and often left acquaintances and friends smiling after an encounter with Harry. Above all, Harry loved his family and in return he was much loved.
Surviving family members include his wife of 43 years, Jeanette (MacLennan) VanBrocklin; daughter, Jacklyn R. Bertolini of Austintown, Ohio; two sons, John F. VanBrocklin of Boardman, Ohio and Rob (Stephanie) VanBrocklin of Odessa, Florida.
