Harry Hiram Russell, 98, passed away peacefully Tuesday, January 10, 2012 in his residence at Shepherd of the Valley - Poland. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am Friday, January 20, 2012 at Boardman United Methodist Church in the Chapel. Friends will be received one hour prior to the service. Friends may also choose to attend a Memorial Service to be held at 10:30 am Saturday, January 21, 2012 at Copeland Oaks Retirement Community (Sebring, Ohio) with calling hours one hour prior to the service.

Mr. Russell was born September 20, 1913 on the family ranch in Penalosa, Kansas. He is the son of Hiram H. and Madys Bates Russell. He was a 1931 graduate of Strong Vincent High School in Erie, Pa.

He began his long career with Canteen Company in 1936 as the service manager for the Erie, Pa. franchise and came to Youngstown in 1955 as the owner and president of Canteen Service of Steel Valley until his retirement in 1978.

He is a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving in WWII. While in Erie he refereed basketball for many years for area high school and college teams. He was a 50 year member of Lawrence Lodge No. 78 F. and AM of Pennsylvania; a member of the Youngstown Rotary Club; past-president of the Mahoning Valley Airstream Association; a charter member and past-president of the Ohio Automatic Merchandising Association; served on the board of the Forest Lawn Cemetery; and was a 56 year member of the Boardman United Methodist Church.. Prior to his residence at Shepherd of the Valley - Poland, he was a longtime resident of Copeland Oaks Retirement Community in Sebring, Ohio. He enjoyed the game of golf and continued to actively play up until just a couple of years ago.

His wife, the former Marie Hawley whom he married October 10, 1936, died January 4, 2001. During their 65 years of marriage they enjoyed a great deal of travel starting with their first home-made travel trailer in which they traveled across the U.S. with their three sons. In later years, they enjoyed traveling with their many Airstream friends throughout the U.S. and several foreign countries.

Surviving him are three sons, Thomas (Jerri) Russell of Greensburg, Indiana; Jack (Sandy) Russell of Boardman; and William (Linda) Russell of Canfield. Five grandchildren, Mathew (Kristen) Russell of Houston, Texas; Michael (Erin) Russell of Annandale, Virginia; Kelly (Aaron) Ingalls of Walton, Kentucky; Mark Russell of Boardman; and Timothy (Allyson) Russell of Canfield and eight great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death besides his wife and parents are four sisters, Annabelle (Frederick) McCurdy; Mary Frances (Richard) Noble; Eleanor (James) Higgins; Alice Irene (Harold) Uldrichs; and a brother Richard (Marietta) Russell.
