George Stephen Hughes, 71

Boardman: George Stephen Hughes, 71, passed away Wednesday morning, August 21, 2019 at Hospice of the Valley, Hospice House with his loving family by his side.

George, known by his family and friends as "Steve" was born January 4, 1948 in East Chicago, Indiana, the son of the late David and Mary (Putnam) Hughes.

He moved to Ohio as a child and graduated from Washington High School in Massillon.

Steve was a U S Army veteran, serving in the Vietnam War.

He worked for Tasco Insulation Company in Youngstown as a pipe insulator for 30 years, retiring in 1999 as a foreman. He attended St. Charles Borromeo Church in Boardman.

Steve is survived by his wife of 49 years, the former Barbara Fesler whom he married on May 2, 1970 two children, Stephenie A. (Joe) Maroni of Boardman and Joel D. (Christina) Hughes of New Middletown; two brothers, Gary (Shirley) Hughes of Howard, Ohio, and Donald (Marilyn) Harrison of Poland; two sisters, Ann (Art ) Mizer of Mount Vernon, Ohio and Charlotte (Joe ) Gardner of Canton, Georgia; seven grandchildren, Justin Maroni, Matthew Maroni, Emily Maroni, Anna Hughes, Jenna Hughes, Dayna Hughes and Nina Hughes.

Steve was preceded in death by his father, David R.Hughes and his mother, Mary C. Reed.

There will be funeral services on Saturday, August 24, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Davis-Becker Funeral Home, 8536 Market Street in Boardman with Father Martin Celuch officiating. Family and friends may call on Friday, August 23, 2019 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. at the funeral home with services to follow. Interment will take place at Columbiana Cemetery.

The family requests that material tributes take the form of contributions to Hospice House, 9803 Sharrott Road, Poland, Ohio 44514 in memory of Steve.

Steve was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother. He enjoyed woodworking, golfing, traveling and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
