Grace Ann Hewis, 78 Poland- Grace Ann Hewis, 78, of Shepherd of the Valley Assisted Living, formerly of 270 N. Main Street in Poland, died Wednesday night at Forum Health Northside Medical Center. Mrs. Hewis was born October 10, 1928 in Youngstown, a daughter of J. Wallace and Mary Lewis Milligan. She was a life-long resident of Poland. Mrs. Hewis graduated from Poland Seminary High School in 1946 and attended Youngstown College. She worked as a Savings Bond Teller at the Youngstown office of The Dollar Savings & Trust Co. for 39 years, retiring in 1990. She was appointed the Mahoning County Savings Bond Chairman by the U.S. Treasury Department in 1978 holding that position until her death. Mrs. Hewis also worked part-time for the Cunningham Funeral Home for 32 years, retiring in 1995. She was a life-long member of the Poland United Methodist Church and a member and past president of both the Alumni Association of Poland Seminary High School and the Second Wind Support Group. Mrs. Hewis was also a member of the Miriam Chapter OES, Coitsville Historical Society, American Institute of Banking, Dollar Bank Retirees Club, and a past member of both the Poland Pantry and Poland Quest Club. She served on Poland Village Council from 1976 to 1982 and the Poland Township Bicentennial Committee. Mrs. Hewisâa�a�� husband, the former Police Chief of Poland, Albert E. Hewis, whom she married October 26, 1963, died June 7, 1970; She leaves one sister, Nancy Gough of Columbus, OH; two nieces, Lynne (Robert) Kirby Reitter and Susan (Scott) Gough Ferguson all of Columbus; one nephew, Lee (Tammy) Kirby of Arcadia, Fl; and six great-nieces and great-nephews. Besides her parents and husband, Mrs. Hewis was preceded in death by one sister, June Kirby. A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 30th at 11:00 AM at the Poland United Methodist Church where friends may call from 10:00 AM until time of service.
