Gladys May Burton Roberts

Gladys May Burton Roberts, 91, of Poland passed away early Sunday morning at Hampton Woods Nursing Home.
Gladys was born in Kentmere-Windermere, England on May 4, 1920, to Nora Annie Longmire Burton and Ralph Albert Burton and was one of seven children.
Gladys came to the United States with her family in 1923, entering through Ellis Island. The family then settled in Great Bridge, Virginia, where Gladys graduated from Kempsville High School. She then studied pre-nursing at Mary Washington College for two years and went on to the St. Vincent DePaul School of Nursing in Norfolk, VA where she graduated two years later as a registered nurse.
Gladys volunteered for the Army Nurse Corps in World War II and served as a 1st Lieutenant through 1945 with the 365th Station Hospital. Two weeks after D-Day, she waded ashore at Normandy, France, and served for months in a field surgical unit which aided our troops as they fought their way across France. Eventually, she reached Paris where she and the 365th set up the American Hospital where she served as a surgical nurse. It was during her service there that she married another Army officer, Lt. Col. Edward Roberts, an attorney from Youngstown, OH, on April 16, 1945, in Paris, France. They met on an Army base in Iceland in 1943.
After the war, Gladys and her husband returned to the United States and settled in Edward's hometown, Youngstown, OH, where they lived, worked and raised a family.
Gladys was dedicated to her family, her church and her community. She was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church and Church Women United. She always was very involved in Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Brownies and Girl Scouts, as well as the Parent-Teacher Association, as her children were growing. Gladys served in the Ladies Auxiliary of the Mahoning County Bar Association and in the Reserve Officers Association with her husband.
Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, Attorney Edward Roberts, her parents, two sisters Molly and Margaret, three brothers Fred, Stanley and William and grandson, Ean Roberts.
She is survived by 5 children, Atty. James "Ted" (Cynthia) Roberts of Poland, OH, Cathy Kajut of Poland, OH, Atty. John (Carlie) Roberts of Annapolis, MD, David Roberts of Nashville, TN, and William (Barbara) Roberts of Nashville, TN, as well as eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, her sister, Nora Umiker, of Lancaster, PA, and nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be Saturday 11:00 AM at Trinity United Methodist. Interment with military honors will follow at Poland Riverside Cemetery.
Friends may call Friday from 4 to 7:00 PM at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, Poland and 10-10:45AM at the church.
