Youngstown - Georgiana Minghetti, 102, formerly of Struthers, died Saturday morning, August 4, 2012 at The Inn at Christine Valley.
Mrs. Minghetti was born April 20, 1910 in Kane, PA, a daughter of Frank and Frances (Gillotti) Battista. Georgiana and her family moved to Youngstown when she was seven and then later to Struthers when she was in high school.
She attended Struthers High School for two years and then left high school to help her family financially. Early on she worked in a grocery store and then in a coal yard, weighing coal. Prior to her marriage, she worked as a cashier at the Hippodrome Theatre in the arcade located in downtown Youngstown, where she sold tickets to stage productions and the opera. She met such stars as Sophie Tucker and other nationally known performers. She also sold night tickets at Idora Park Box Office for the Lillian Desmond Productions and came to know Lillian Desmond personally. As a result of her working in the downtown arcade, she was recruited by the owner of the Eleanor Hat Shop to assist her as a hat designer.
On Thanksgiving Day, November 30, 1933, she married her husband, John Joseph Minghetti, at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Struthers. They celebrated 67 years of marriage before his death on July 28, 2001. Prior to her marriage and after, she and her husband belonged to the Bachelor's Dance Club. They would go dancing weekly to the sounds of the big bands at such places as Yankee Lake & Idora Park and would also square dance weekly with their friends. In later years, they were members of the Good Times Mixed Bowling Group, which consisted of a group from the post office, where John retired in 1972 as assistant postmaster.
Georgiana always enjoyed playing bingo, crocheting, doing needlework, sewing and playing "500" with her ladies card club. She enjoyed cooking and her family can vouch for her great culinary skills. Her specialties included making a variety of homemade pastas and making her famous banana cake (everyone always asked for the recipe).
She was a member of Christ Our Savior Parish at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church. Her church activities included membership in the Altar and Rosary Society and the Infant Jesus of Prague Guild.
She is survived by five daughters, Frances (John) Baumann of Oberlin, Marion (James) Calpin of Canfield, Margaret (John Polanski) Minghetti of Mineral Ridge, Carol Carducci of Cortland, and Nancy Minghetti of Baltimore; sister, Florence Zoldak of Stuart, Florida; seven grandchildren, Jeffrey (Milo Laubscher) Baumann, Mark (Arline) Baumann, Jennifer (Michael Thompson) Baumann, Marybeth (Thomas) Williams, James P. Calpin, Richard (Carolyn) Carducci, and Diana (Robert) Cunningham; and eight great-grandchildren, Anthony, Brian, Erin, Jessica, Richard, Una, Kenny, and Zachary.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Joseph, Dominic, James, and William Battista; three sisters, Mary Botsko, Catherine Connor, and Eleanor "Nora" Papalia; son-in-law, Richard Carducci; and two great-grandchildren, Brandon and Madison.
A prayer service will be held Thursday at 9:15 a.m. at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church, in the lower church hall. Interment will follow at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery.
Family and friends will be received Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
The family requests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions in Mrs. Minghetti's name to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation, 2200 Research Blvd, Rockville, MD 20850 or to the Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley, 2805 Salt Springs Road, Youngstown, Ohio 44509.
Georgiana's family would also like to express their appreciation and thank the staff of The Inn at Christine Valley for the exceptional care they gave to her throughout the years.
