Georgeann Sicafuse Houck

August 30, 1942 — May 19, 2013

Struthers - Georgeann Houck, 70, a life long resident of Struthers, died early Sunday morning, May 19, 2013 at the Hospice House.

Georgeann was born August 30, 1942 in Youngstown, a daughter of the late George and Velma Allshouse Sicafuse.

A 1960 graduate of Struthers High School, Georgeann earned her Bachelor of Art Degree from Youngstown University in 1965. She was employed by the Mahoning County Welfare Department prior to opening her own Daycare Service "Bear Hugs" in 1988.

In 2006, she received the NAEYC Accreditation Award, the highest national accreditation award given to early childhood education and childcare standards. Only 10 percent of the facilities nationwide met that standard at that time and Bear Hugs maintained that status until its closing in 2010.

In 2007, Georgeann was also awarded the Quality Enhancement Grant and Professional Development Grant through the Raymond John Wean Foundation and the Quality Enhancement Project for her years of dedication and hard work.

An active and loyal member of the former Struthers Presbyterian Church now known as Struthers Parkside Church, Georgeann served as Deacon, Elder, and Superintendent of the Sunday school classes. Georgeann was also a Youth Advisor of the church, a member of the Saints and Sinners Sunday school class and the Women's Association. Georgeann was passionate about serving on the Mission Committee and in 2004 went on the mission trip to El Salvador. While her children were in school, Georgeann served as president and treasurer of the Struthers PTA and served on Project Sunshine (Drug Prevention program) at the elementary school. Georgeann was a member of the Trumbull and Mahoning County Early Childhood Education Association.

In her spare time, Georgeann cherished spending time with her family and grandchildren. She also enjoyed traveling with her husband and family and had the experience of visiting China, Costa Rica, and the 48 states.

Georgeann leaves her husband, Gary Houck, whom she married June 25, 1966; one daughter, Lynn Sorokach of Struthers; one son, Eric Houck of Alpharetta, GA; two brothers, Don (Heidi) Sicafuse of Struthers and Ron (Billie) Sicafuse of Poland; sister, Audrey (Warren) Morrison of Uniontown; and three grandchildren, Alaura, Leah Bella, and Donovan.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Struthers Parkside Church, where family and friends will be received from 9-10:45 a.m. prior to the service. Interment will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Boardman.

Contributions may be made to the Parkside Church Missions, 110 Poland Ave., Struthers, OH 44471 or to Hospice of the Valley, Hospice House, 9803 Sharrott Road, Poland, OH 44514.
