Struthers - George John Phillips, 87, of Struthers, died early Thursday morning at Hospice of the Valley, Hospice House. Mr. Phillips was born May 3, 1921, in Struthers, a son of George and Mary Yancar Phillips. He was a life-long resident of Struthers. He was a 1939 graduate of Struthers High School and went on to work for Youngstown Sheet and Tube, first in the Blacksmith Shop, then the Skelp Mill. After 33 years, he retired in 1976 as a checker and weigher for the seamless plant of LTV. An Army AirCorps veteran serving from 1942 until 1946, Mr. Phillips served in Guam and the Philippines. One of his many enjoyable memories was escorting Bob Hope by jeep in Guam. Mr. Phillips was a member of Local 3098, Jednota 25, Catholic Order of Foresters and the Youngstown Photography Club, where he won the Slide of the Year Award. Mr. Phillips was a self-educated presidential historian and gave numerous presentations on the "Presidents of the United States" and "This is America." He was a member of St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Struthers. He leaves his wife, the former Marie Judin, whom he married September 18, 1947; his daughter, Patricia (Michael) Almasy of Columbiana; a son-in-law, Chuck Campbell of Struthers; a sister, Helen Ennis of Pittsburgh, PA; a granddaughter, Carolyn (Tom) Styranec of Pensacola, FL; three great-grandchildren, Bradley, Jordan and Grace Styranec. Besides his parents, Mr. Phillips was preceded in death by his daughter, Carol Campbell on May 8th of this year; and two sisters, Marie Baker and Veronica Yurcko. Funeral services will be held Monday at 10:00 a.m. at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home in Struthers and 10:30 a.m. at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Green Haven Memorial Gardens, Canfield. Friends will be received Sunday from 4-7 p.m. at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home.
