GEORGE E. PEKKANEN, SR. -91 POLANDâa�"George E. Pekkanen, Sr., 91, of Poland, died Sunday evening at Shepherd of the Valley in Boardman. Mr. Pekkanen was born Febuary 7, 1915 in Poland, a son of Edwin & Alena Namie Pekkanen. He was a 1933 Graduate of Poland Seminary High School. Mr. Pekkanen enlisted in the Army in 1942 serving in the European Theater with the 82nd Airborne division, seeing service in Africa, Sicily, Italy, Normandy and the Final assault on Berlin. He began working with Ohio Edison in 1947, retiring in 1977 as Stationary Engineer. He enjoyed gardening and sports. His wife the former Elma Parkanen whom he married May 19, 1947, died July 4, 1993. He is survived by one son, George E. Pekkanen, Jr., of Salt Lake City, UT.; two sisters, Elsa Metting of Liberty Lake, WA., and Elma (James) Ramsey of Poland; two brothers, Walter (Giovanna) Pekkanen and Leo Pekkanen both of Poland; and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and wife, he is preceded in death by two sisters, Sylvia Stoner, Gertrude Elder, and one brother, William Pekkanen. Family will receive friends Wednesday from 4:00 âa�" 8:00 PM and Thursday from 10:00 âa�" 10:45 AM at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, Poland where services will be held Thursday at 11:00 AM.
