AUSTINTOWN-George R. McComb, 83, died at his home in the early morning hours of Thursday, November 19, 2009. He had been ill in recent weeks.
He was born on February 3, 1926, in New Castle, PA, a son of Jack C. and Marguerite A. Monteith McComb. Raised in New Castle, George spent time helping his grandparents maintain the grounds of Graceland Cemetery, which they managed.
Later, he moved to the Youngstown area, working first at the McGill Dairy in Poland with his uncle, Ronald McGill and cousin, John McGill. He was a top salesman at Coca-Cola in Youngstown, then worked for Grennen Cookbook and Bakery, before pursuing his true passion - automobiles. He opened Custom Motors in 1950. With his brother, Dave, he co-owned and operated McComb Motor Sales, the McComb Auto Ranch and the Akron Auto Auction.
George knew more about cars than just selling them. As a youth, he dismantled and rebuilt cars to learn everything about them. He never tired of talking about cars and loved to share his knowledge of them with others.
His greatest joy in life was his daughter, Cheryl. He would take Cheryl and her childhood best friend, Rosie, for rides in the latest custom convertible he was driving, or take them to work with him on Saturdays whenever he could. He wasn't a traditional father, and he knew it, but he could not have been a more devoted or loving one. His was not a life without challenges, but he persevered, and in the end he overcame most of them.
Besides his parents, George was preceded in death by his brother, David Lee McComb.
He is survived by his daughter, Cheryl McComb Richards and son-in-law, Dennis; his former wife and best friend, Audrey McComb; his sister-in-law and friend, Jean McComb, all of Poland; his cousin and good friend, John McGill and wife Jackie, of Long Beach, CA; and other McComb, McGill and Monteith cousins. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
The family would like to thank Dr. Roy Morcos and his staff, Cathy and Linda, for the kindness and care extended to him over the many years of their long association. Also, a special thanks to George's longtime neighbors, Mr. Norman and Mr. Frease, for always looking out for him.
A private memorial service is planned. Interment will be at Lake Park Cemetery.
Memorial tributes may be made in George's name to the American Lung Association, 6100 Rockside Woods Blvd., No. 260, Independence, Ohio 44131 or to the Bummer Fund, 269 Redondo Road, Youngstown, Ohio 44504. The Bummer Fund aids animals in need of medical care.
