Canfield - George R. Kelso, 85, died January 8, 2017 at Masternick Memorial Health Care Center. Mr. Kelso was born March 27, 1931 in Youngstown, a son of George and Mabel Harry Kelso.

He was a 1950 Boardman High School graduate and worked as a Draftsmen for General Fireproofing, retiring in 1984. He went on to be a bus driver at Canfield Township Schools. George was a founding member of Class B Baseball in the Mahoning Valley and was a manager/coach in the 1960's and 70's. He was a life long exhibitor at the Canfield Fair primarily with the ponies, he also was a Ringmaster at the Pony Palace for many years. George had a National Grand-Champion Registered Shetland Pony.

George was a founding member of the Mahoning Valley Pony Breeders Association and member of the Ohio Welsh Pony Association.

A veteran of the United States Army, George served during the Korean Conflict, where he received a Purple Heart.

He loved camping and baseball and was an avid Cleveland Indians and Cavaliers fan.

He is survived by a nephew, Charles W. (Linda) Kelso Jr. of Boardman; niece, Janice (Richard) Howenstine of Marengo, OH; two great-nieces, Lee Ann (William) Myers of Boardman and Elizabeth (Dan) Ruth of Mt. Vernon, OH; three great-nephews, Charles W. Kelso, III of Canfield, David (Wendy) Kelso of Boardman, and Richard (Jessica) Howenstine of Sparta, OH; 10 great-great nieces and nephews; and a host of other family and friends.

Besides his parents, George was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles W. Kelso, Sr. and John Bruce Kelso.

Friends and family will be received Saturday from 4:30PM-6:15PM at the Davis-Becker Funeral Home, 8536 Market St., Boardman,

followed by a memorial service at 6:30PM.

Although flowers are beautiful the family requests donations to be made to Our Community Kitchen, 551 Mahoning Ave., Youngstown, OH 44502 or the Rescue Mission, 962 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Youngstown 44501.
