George Delost, Jr., 92
Struthers- George Delost, Jr., 92, of Struthers passed away on Sunday morning, July 28, 2013 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Boardman, Ohio. Mr. Delost was born on July 26, 1921 in Dunferline, Illinois, a son of the late George and Pauline (Grzanich) Delost and came to Struthers as a child.
He attended Struthers High School and served for two years in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). He worked for the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company as a boilermaker and entered the military in 1942. He retired from the Youngstown Sheet and Tube in 1982 after forty two years of service.
George was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, and earned the rank of First Sergeant. During wartime, he was honored with many medals; He landed in Normandy days after the D-Day Invasion of June 6, 1944 and during the next three years in Europe which he described as a continuous war, participated in the Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Central Europe and Ardennes campaigns. Shortly after the Battle of St. Lo ended on July 18, 1944, when his platoon leader became a casualty, he then became a sergeant and took over the platoon. For his actions, George was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for Valor. He was then awarded the Silver Star for meritorious actions on November 8, 1944 at the Foret de Gremecey battle in France for saving the lives of his platoon while under attack by heavy enemy machine gun and shell fire. Other military decorations that Mr. Delost received during wartime were the European, African, Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbons; five bronze stars, one each for the campaigns in which he participated and Good Conduct Ribbons. Notably one of his highest wartime recognitions is the Croix de guerre which was awarded to him by then General Charles de Gaulle for his assistance in the liberation of France.
On October 6, 2010, Mr. Delost was awarded the Knight of the Legion of Honor by French President Nicolas Sarkozy. This outstanding distinction is the highest honor that France can bestow on those who have achieved remarkable deeds. On May 3, 2013, he was inducted into the 2013 Class of the Ohio Military Hall of Fame for Valor at the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus, recognizing Ohio veterans who received medals for valor while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.
George will always be remembered and loved by his family and friends for his generosity, friendships and for being a devoted family man who enjoyed gardening and volunteering his time to others. He also enjoyed attending his grandsons' academic and sports activities. He was actively involved in the Struthers Baseball League for many years, having served as both President and Trustee of the League. He was also a manager of several Class B and Little League baseball teams in Struthers. George was an avid bowler and participated in many leagues throughout the area. George was a member of many community organizations, including the St. Nicholas Booster Club. Above all, he enjoyed spending time with his family.
Mr. Delost was a lifetime member of Christ our Savior Parish (St. Nicholas Church) in Struthers.
George leaves his wife of sixty-seven years, the former Mary F. Aracich, who he married on November 16, 1946 at St. Nicholas Church. He also leaves three sons, Thomas G. Delost of Struthers, Attorney Raymond M. (Dr. Maria) Delost of Struthers, and Gary S. (Gloria) Delost of Poland; two grandchildren, Gregory R. and Michael D. Delost both o f Struthers; and two sisters-in-law, Amelia Zaluski of Struthers and Katherine Delost of Fairview Park, OH; many nieces and nephews; and a dear friend and neighbor, Mark Moschella.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Ruth Schreick, Stana Knapic, Jennie Lancaster and Mary Black; and by three brothers, Peter, Donald, and Fred Delost.
A prayer service will be Thursday, August 1, 2013, 9:30 a.m. at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home, 11 Spring St. in Struthers and continue with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Christ our Savior Parish at St. Nicholas Church, 764 Fifth Street in Struthers with Father Bernard Bonnot officiating. Interment will take place at Calvary Cemetery, Youngstown, with full military honors.
Family and friends may call on Wednesday, July 31, 2013 from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
