Poland - Gene G. Smith, 70 of Poland, died Wednesday evening, February 26, 2014 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center.
Gene was born July 1, 1943 in Cleveland a son of Earl and Minnie Ennis Smith.
He was raised in West Virginia and graduated from Wellsburg High School in 1961.
Gene worked as a maintenance supervisor, retiring in 2006. One of the highlights after he retired was being a friend and care giver to James F. Thomas. Gene was a United States Army Veteran serving in the Vietnam War.
He was an active member of Christ Lutheran Church in Struthers where he served on Church Council and the Prayer Group. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, the Cleveland Indians, "The" Ohio State Buckeyes, casinos and especially camping at the Canfield Fair with his "fair family". Gene spent 23 years working at the Canfield Fair as a Police officer.
Gene leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, the former Colleen Stevens, whom he married July 22, 2000; aunts, Katie (Burt) Hunt and Freda Ennis; nieces, Heather Bradley and Leeann Alexander; mother-in-law, Peggy Stevens; and sister-in-law, Kelly Stevens; cousins and many friends. He also leaves a son, Matthew and two daughters, Nichole and Katherine.
Besides his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his sister, Virginia "Sue" Young; and brothers, Earl T. Jr. (Buddy), Richard, and Robert Smith.
A celebration of Gene's Life will be held at Christ Lutheran Church on Saturday, April 26, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Paul Burgeson officiating.
Friends will be received one hour prior to the service.
