Poland - Gale L. Sprague, 92, of Poland, died Monday afternoon, May 30, 2011 at the Hospice House.
Mr. Sprague was born December 24, 1918 in Struthers, the son of the late Gale W. and Ella Carlson Sprague.
He was raised in Struthers and was a 1937 graduate of Struthers High School. In 1941, he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps, serving during World War II, and was honorably discharged in 1945.
Mr. Sprague was first employed by Republic Steel for 23 years as a pipe fitter, and he retired in 1984 as a senior bank officer from Union National Bank, which is now Chase Bank.
He was a member of the Poland United Methodist Church. Mr. Sprague enjoyed woodworking, golfing, and was a member of the Gaelic Golf League that played at Tanglewood Golf Course.
He leaves his wife, the former Betty Jane Roberts, whom he married September 4, 1942; two daughters, Rebecca "Becky" Williams of Poland and Roberta "Bobbie" Ridel of Columbiana; sister, Patricia Schonhut of Columbiana; four grandchildren, Kristen (Greg) Shepley of Girard, Kelly (Jeff) Pellin of Boardman, Matt (Kristin) Ridel of Maumee, and Bob (Sarah) Ridel of Youngstown; and six great-grandchildren, Morgan, Abigail, Joshua, Jordan, Emma, and Kaitlyn.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Lois Bray; and a son-in-law, Alfred Ridel.
A memorial service will be held Friday at 5 p.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland, where family and friends will be received one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Poland Riverside Cemetery.
The family requests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions in Mr. Sprague's name to Hospice House, 9803 Sharrott Rd., Poland, Ohio 44514.
