Struthers - Frederick E. Horvath, 84, of Struthers, passed away peacefully of complications from Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, Wednesday evening, February 26, at his residence with his family by his side.
Fred was born October 24, 1929 in Youngstown, a son of Ignac and Irene Heban Horvath.
He was raised on Youngstown's East Side and was a 1947 graduate of East High School. In 1951, Fred enlisted in the United States Army and served from 1951-1953 in Salzburg, Austria. He served in the Army Reserves from 1953 until his honorable discharge in 1957. His rank was Corporal.
Fred worked at Republic Steel, LTV, and then WCI , where he retired in 1993 as a shipper in the Shipping and Receiving Department after 46 years of service. He also served as Financial Secretary for the U.S.W. Local 1875 for 10 years.
An active and life-long member of St. Stephen of Hungary Church, Fred served as Lector, was a member of the Holy Name Society and enjoyed Hurka making for many years. He was also a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Youngstown.
Fred enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, both flowers and vegetables. He grew the best tomatoes and enjoyed sharing his garden with friends and family. He was a former member of the Struthers VFW Post #3538 and the Struthers Knights of Columbus. Fred also enjoyed coaching his three sons in Struthers Little League Baseball.
Fred's most treasured memories were of his family gatherings, especially Christmas where he loved singing carols with his family. He was a true gentleman and a man of great integrity. He was always respectful and never had a bad word to say about anyone.
He leaves the love of his life, "Louisa", his wife of 54 years, the former Louise Fumi, whom he married May 9, 1959; four children, Fred Horvath Jr., of Struthers, Richard (Sandi) Horvath of Poland, Anthony Horvath of Struthers, and Valerie (Bill) Sandora of Tallmadge; seven grandchildren, Anthony John, Shawna, Tara, Zachary, Christine, Anthony Rocco, and Alicia; one great-granddaughter, Sidney; one sister, Irene Gianfrancesco of Youngstown; sisters-in-law, Anita Marsco and Virginia (Richard) Pallante; brother-in-law, Rocco (Sylvia) Fumi; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Fred was preceded in death by brothers-in-law, Dan Gianfrancesco and Dominic Marsco, and a nephew, Anthony Pallante.
The family would like to thank all those involved in his care, especially Andrea, Rosa, and Mesha from MVI Hospice and Dr. Art Duran and the entire office staff at Poland Medical Center.
Fred faithfully served his God, his family, and his country. May he rest in peace.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, 10:30 AM at St. Stephen of Hungary Church, with Fr. Bernard Bonnot presiding. Interment will follow at the Calvary Cemetery in Youngstown.
Family and friends will be received Sunday from 2:00 PM until 5:00 PM at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, Poland, where a Prayer Service will be held Monday at 9:45 AM.
