Struthers - Fred L. Kifer, 88, died Thursday evening, September 20, 2012 at his home, surrounded by his family.
Mr. Kifer was born February 14, 1924 in Clarion County, PA, a son of Henry and Ruby Dunkle Kifer.
Before moving to Struthers in 1950, Fred worked in the coal mines in Pennsylvania. He worked as an overhead craneman for Youngstown Sheet & Tube and LTV, retiring in 1978.
On May 4, 1953, Fred married the former Thelma Finefrock several days before his entry in the United States Army. Serving during World War II, he received several decorations, including the Purple Heart, the American Theater Ribbon, the European African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon, and a Victory Medal, and was honorably discharged on November 3, 1945.
In his spare time, Fred enjoyed working, cleaning, and maintaining his cars and cutting grass and manicuring his lawn.
His wife, Thelma, of 66 years, preceded him in death on November 29, 2009. He is survived by his daughter, Louanne (David) Smith of Struthers; three sons, Fred (Marie) Kifer Jr. of Boardman, Dean (Barbara) Kifer of Canfield, and Timothy (Colleen) Kifer of Struthers; nine grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, Fred was preceded in death by a son, Andrew Kifer; three sisters, Bessie Kifer, June Cotherman, and Dorothy Bissett; and two brothers, Edward and Melvin Kifer.
Services will be held Monday at 11 a.m at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home in Struthers with Minister Derek Long officiating. Interment will follow at the Sligo Cemetery in Sligo, PA
Family and friends will be received Monday from 9:30-10:45 a.m. at the funeral home, prior to the service.
