Struthers - Frank Joseph "Colt" Tombo, Sr., 86, of Struthers, died Tuesday, October 7, 2008 peacefully at his home with his family at his side. Mr. Tombo was born June 7, 1922 in Youngstown, a son of Joseph and Jesse Tianni Tombo. He worked as a crane man for Youngstown Sheet and Tube for 32 years, retiring in 1977. After retirement, Mr. Tombo worked for 23 more years with his wife at Avis Rental Car. He was a former member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. He was a United States Army Veteran serving during World War II in the 83rd Armored Division under General Patton's Third Army. Mr. Tombo took part in D-Day, the Normandy Invasion, the Battle at St. Lo, the Battle of the Bulge, and he landed on Omaha Beach in France. He received three combat theatre medals and a bronze star for his service. His wife, the former Serene M. DeRose, whom he married January 3, 1948, died August 25, 2003. He leaves his son, Frank (Joan) Tombo, Jr. of Poland; two granddaughters, Kelly (Mark) Minehart of Poland and Brandi (Brian) Hermiller of Pittsburgh; four great-grandchildren, Jack and Megan Minehart and Kate and Matthew Hermiller; and his brother, Tony (Helen "Skippy") Tombo of Liberty. Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Bert and Al Tombo; and one sister, Lena Gentile. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home in Struthers. Interment will follow at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery.
