YOUNGSTOWN ­ Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Davis-Becker Funeral Home for Florence Babcock, 94. She passed away Sunday morning at ValleyCare Northside Medical Center.
Mrs. Babcock was born July 25, 1918, in Lakewood, a daughter of Charles and Harriet Stuehr Thompson. She came to Youngstown area in the late 1920s.
Florence graduated from South High School in 1936 and received a teaching diploma from Kent State College in 1938. She retired in 1975 after working in the Youngstown City Schools for 28 years. She worked as an assistant teacher and secretary at Tod and Parmalee schools and also a secretary at Cleveland and Washington Schools. She ended her career at the Board of Education offices in the Personnel Department, where she called out the substitute teachers. She was very proud of her years there.
She was a member of the Christ Church Presbyterian, the Youngstown Panhellenic Association, a life member of Sigma Kappa Sorority, she enjoyed participating in the Happy Days Senior Citizen¹s Group from Bethlehem Lutheran Church, the Senior Luncheon Group and Lydia Circle from the Christ Church.
She and her husband were volunteers for the American Red Cross blood program for several years, and also delivered Meals on Wheels for a short time.
Her husband, James F. Babcock, whom she married March 30, 1946, died Nov.
22, 2002.
Surviving her are two daughters, Janet (Tom) Costello and Susan (Mike) Gassman; a granddaughter, Jennifer (Mike) Wolfe; and two grandsons, Adam
(Danielle) Costello, and Jared Hanselman. Also, great-grandchildren Mallory and Cameron Wolfe, and three nieces, Sherri Ligotti, Patti (Wick) Flower, and Sandra (Dave) Dunbar.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Richard Thompson.
Friends may call Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the funeral home.
