Struthers - Eugene L. "Bumpy" Smrek, 73, of Struthers, died Wednesday morning at Hospice of the Valley, Hospice House.
Bumpy was born June 29, 1938 in Youngstown, a son of Charles and Catherine Evon Smrek.
A life-long resident of Struthers, Bumpy was a 1956 graduate of Struthers High School. Bumpy was a Journeyman/Electrician and worked as a motor inspector in the seamless department of Youngstown Sheet & Tube and later LTV, retiring in 1984. He went on to work in maintenance for the Struthers School District for 20 years retiring in 2008.
A member of St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church, Bumpy was also a member of Struthers VFW Post #3538. He played bocce and was a member of St. Anthony and the MVR Bocce Leagues. Every fall he enjoyed planting garlic and in the spring his tomatoes. He was famous for his garlic/tomato recipes.
Bumpy loved baseball and was a life-long coach, coaching Struthers baseball and softball, from the 70's until the 90's. As a grandparent he graduated from coach to watching his grandchildren play sports. Bumpy was a huge fan of Struthers Sports, and rarely missed an event, unless he had to leave early for bocce.
He leaves his wife, the former Elaine Sheets, whom he married February 26, 1962; three children, Eugene (Carolyn) Smrek Jr. of Poland, Janeen (Andrew) Lattanzio also of Poland, and Shannon (Anthony) Monaco of Struthers; one brother, Philip (Joan) Smrek of Canfield; and six grandchildren, Morgan, Halle, Torre, Carlie, Anthony III, and Camryn.
Besides his parents, Bumpy was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Smrek.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, 10:00 am at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church, Struthers with Fr. Bernard N. Gaeta officiating.
Friends will be received Friday from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home, Struthers, where a prayer service will be held Saturday at 9:15 AM.
