McCaysville, GA - Eugene Paul Sheely, 87, died early Saturday morning, April 21, 2012 at his residence.
Mr. Sheely was born October 17, 1924 in East Palestine, a son of Paul and Helen (Myers) Sheely.
He was a graduate of Lowellville High School and worked in the mail car and later as a foreman for REA Railroad until their closing. He then worked for Pennsylvania Truck Lines as a safety supervisor until his retirement. After retirement, he decided to go back to work as a security guard for Park Vista Retirement Community, working there until 1998.
He was a proud United States Marine Corps Veteran, serving during World War II, and received the Purple Heart. Following in his footsteps, his three sons also proudly served in the military during Vietnam, as well as his grandson, James Jr., who served during Desert Storm. All three of his sons, were also awarded the Purple Heart.
Mr. Sheely was a member of the VFW and the McCaysville Church of Christ.
His wife, the former Alice Cornett, whom he married January 8, 1944, died May 25, 2011. He is survived by three sons, Robert (Melanie) Sheely of McCaysville, GA, John Sheely of Reedsport, OR, and James (Debbie) Sheely of Phoenix, AZ; daughter, Alice (Minister Bill) Johnston of McCaysville, GA; five sisters, Bernita Vernon, Harriet Vaporatus, both of New Middletown, Mary Lou Kish, Laverne Tynell, both of Youngstown, and Irene Butch of Edinburg, PA; eight grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Alan Paul Sheely.
Family and friends will be received Thursday from 5-8 p.m. and Friday from 11 a.m.-12:45 p.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Lowellville. Funeral services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with Minister Bill Johnston officiating. Interment will follow at Petersburg Cemetery.
