Lowellville - Eugene "Gene" Moretti, Sr., 88, died Wednesday morning, October 29, 2014 at the Hospice House.
Mr. Moretti, known as "Gene," was born August 14, 1926 in Hillsville, PA, a son of Nazzareno and Angeline Mangine Moretti. He was raised in Erskine Quarry and attended Union High School. Gene moved to Lowellville upon his marriage.
In November of 1944, he enlisted in the United States Army, serving in the Philippines. He was honorably discharged in November of 1946 with the rank of Staff Sergeant. Upon his return home, he began working in the coal mines until taking the position of heavy equipment operator with Honeycreek Stone in Petersburg. He worked with the company for over 20 years, retiring in 1991.
He was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church in Lowellville and was proud to have helped with the building of the church. Gene was also a member of the American Legion in Lowellville and a proud member of the International Union Operating Engineers District 66. An avid gardener, Gene always looked forward to planting and tending to his annual vegetable garden.
His wife of 62 years, the former Mae Marie Albrecht, whom he married October 22, 1949, died November 27, 2011. He is survived by his son, Eugene (Kimberlee) Moretti Jr. of Cato, NY; three daughters, Christine (Robert) Skebo of Dayton, Michele (Patrick) Madison of Lowellville, and Stephanie (Peter) Bice of Allen, TX; a brother, Donald (Helen) Moretti of Struthers; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, Gene was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Bonace; and three brothers, Pat, John, and George Moretti.
A prayer service will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, 244 McGill St., Lowellville, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church with Fr. John Jerek officiating. Interment will follow at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Cemetery.
Family and friends will be received on Friday from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
