Struthers - Esther Woodward, 93, of Struthers, died early Wednesday morning in Maplecrest Nursing Home. Esther was born August 14, 1914 in Elizabeth, West Virginia, a daughter of George Franklin and Margaret Jane Brown Hambelton. She was raised in Elm Grove, W.VA., and in 1920 moved to Steubenville and in 1943 to this area. Esther was a short order cook and a waitress for McCrory's 5&10, downtown Youngstown, for 20 years, retiring in 1979. An active member of the former United Brethren in Christ Church, Esther served on the board as financial secretary, was a Sunday school teacher, and played the organ and piano. She was also a volunteer for the St. Elizabeth Hospital Ambulatory Clinic for 20 years retiring in 1999. Her husband, Daniel Joseph Woodward Sr., whom she married September 16, 1935, died September 19, 1981. She leaves two daughters, Suzanne DuPuis of Shepherd, MT, and Margaret (Larry) Singer of Hubbard; two sons, Daniel James Woodward Sr. of Struthers, and Daniel Joseph Woodward Jr. of Youngstown; and her greatest joys in life, her sixteen grandchildren, twenty-seven great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and her step-grandchildren, the Belestrino and Singer children. Besides her parents and her husband, Esther was preceded in death by her daughter, Donna Marie Woolensack Wright; brother, William Hambelton; and sister, Clarice June. Funeral services will be held Saturday, 1:30 p.m. at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home, Struthers with Rev. Roger Overmyer officiating. Interment will be Monday, 10:00 a.m. in the Lake Park Cemetery, Youngstown, with Rev. John Wiseman officiating. Friends will be received Friday from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
