Poland - Ernest Smith, Jr., 82, died unexpectedly Saturday evening October 18, 2014 at St. Elizabeth Health Center.

Mr. Smith was born November 20, 1931 in Youngstown, a son of the late Ernest and Helen Guy Smith, and was raised in New Bedford, PA.

He was a 1951 graduate of Union High School. After graduation, he served in the National Guard of Pennsylvania and then enlisted in the United States Navy. Mr. Smith served during the Korean War from June of 1951 until being honorably discharged in June of 1955. Upon his return from the service, he attended Youngstown College.

Mr. Smith was first employed by Republic Steel, then worked for 19 years as a route supervisor for Servi-Clean Industries, and retired as a driver from Miller Foods after 15 years of service. He was a member of the Teamsters Local 377.

In his free time, he enjoyed reading and had a passion for gardening and especially loved planting his annual vegetable garden.

His wife, the former Sandra Hetrick, whom he married August 22, 1959, died April 22, 2013. He is survived by his three daughters, Naudine Best, Lisa (Ken) Conzett, both of Poland, and Candy (Dan) Greene of Columbiana; son, Thaddeus (Kiesha) Smith of Canfield; brother, Donald (Dee) Smith of Parma; eight grandchildren, Royce (Katie) Best of Baltimore, MD, Cassandra Best of Poland, Callista (Ryan) Dammann of Hilliard, Shayna Conzett of Canal Winchester, Chelsea Conzett, Chandra Conzett, both of Poland, Jarret (Emily) Greene of Columbus, and Tanner Greene of Columbiana; and a great-granddaughter, Camden Dammann.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, 270 N. Main St., Poland.

Family and friends will be received on Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family suggests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions to the American Lung Association, 55 W. Wacker Drive, Suite 1150, Chicago, IL 60601.
