Struthers - Elmer S. Smith, 94, died Thursday evening, November 21, 2013 at Glenellen Assisted Living.
Elmer was born September 18, 1919 in Youngstown. He was a graduate of East High School and continued his education at Youngstown College. Elmer left college and began his career as a mechanic. He worked for many of the Chrysler dealerships in the Youngstown area and eventually started his own business, Smitty's Service on Fifth and Elm Street in Struthers.
Elmer decided to go back to school and enrolled at Kent State University where he received his teaching certificate. He taught at the former Mahoning County Joint Vocational School for over 15 years.
Elmer was a member of Christ Our Savior Parish at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Struthers, the Barber Shop Singers and Independent Garage Owners Association.
Elmer's wife the former Patricia Ann Gish, whom he married April 15, 1944, died January 19, 2001. He is survived by his three sons, Jerry (Susan) Smith and Dennis (Lee) Smith, both of Poland, and Gregg (Mecky) Smith of FL; and six grandchildren.
Besides his parents and wife, Elmer was preceded in death by two brothers, Steven Smith Jr. and William Smith; and one sister, Virginia Kinnick.
Funeral services will be private. Arrangements are being handled by the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home in Struthers.
