Elma A. Ramsey, 82
POLAND - Elma A. Ramsey, 82, died peacefully at her residence surrounded by her family on April 24, 2012.
Elma was born Aug. 10, 1929, in Poland, a daughter of Edwin and Lena Niemi Pekkanen.
She was a 1947 Poland Seminary High School graduate and went on to work as a bookkeeper for McBride Motors in Lowellville. Elma had been a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in New Middletown and the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Poland. She most recently attended the Old North Church in Canfield.
She was a volunteer at Hospice of the Valley for 18 years and was a past board member of both Shepherd of the Valley and Lutheran Outdoor Ministries of Ohio. She was also a participant in the Jewish Christian Dialogue. On June 12, 2000, Elma was recognized as, "Daily Point of Light No. 1658" on behalf of her volunteer efforts at Hospice of the Valley.
She is survived by her husband, Jim, whom she married Oct. 12, 1949; a son, Jim (Gio) Ramsey of Poland; a daughter, Janet (Bob) Bish of North Las Vegas; two brothers, Walter Pekkanen of Poland and Leo Pekkanen of Houston; a sister, Elsa Metting of Spokane, Wash.; eight grandchildren, Jonathan (Chelsea) Bish of Hawaii, Jennifer Bish of Los Angeles, Adrienne Bish of Austintown, Jim (Esther) Ramsey III of San Diego, Jeffrey (Gabrielle) Ramsey of San Diego, Lauren Ramsey of Poland, Jordan Ramsey of Indianapolis, and Grant Ramsey of Poland; two great-grandchildren, James Ramsey IV and Charles Ramsey; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Elma was preceded in death by two sisters, Gertrude Elder and Sylvia Stoner; and two brothers, William and George Pekkanen.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 2, 2012, at the Old North Church.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Arrangements are being handled by the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, Poland.
