Elizabeth Barbara Yanek, 88, passed away Wednesday evening, March 20, 2024 at Assumption Village with her children at her side.
Elizabeth, affectionately known as Liz, was born July 10, 1935, in Campbell, Ohio, the youngest of ten children, to Anthony and Barbara Pachla Mudryk.
A lifelong resident of Campbell, Liz graduated from Campbell Memorial High School in 1953 and attended Youngstown University where she was a member of the Tau Kappa Nu Sorority.
During the Korean Conflict, Liz contributed to the war efforts by becoming a pen pal to a young navy man serving over seas by the name of Francis Yanek. When Frank returned home, he courted Liz, and shortly after falling in love with his blue eyes, they were married on May 12, 1956 at St. Mathias Catholic Church and made their home in Campbell. Liz loved her role as a homemaker taking care of her husband and two children, but she also enjoyed working outside her home. She first worked at the Palace Theater in Youngstown, McKelvey's Department Store, downtown, Youngstown and Ohio Notion and Paper Company. She used her typing and secretarial skills to help her son open his practice, and later worked at the family business, Milsek furniture polish.
A devoted catholic, Liz was a 50 year member of her beloved church, the former St. Joseph The Provider Catholic Church in Campbell. She worked tirelessly as a pierogi lady for over 50 years and after her stroke, she returned for St. Joseph's last year in service to pinch pierogi. She was a member of the Infant Jesus of Prague Guild and the Altar and Rosary Society. Elizabeth was active with the church youth ministry, the renewal team, and Bingo. She volunteered her time at St. Joseph School PTC, teaching typing class and other various church and school groups. She was a Den Mother with both the Cub Scouts and Campfire Girls.
Liz loved her Polish heritage and never met a stuffed cabbage, halushki, or pierogi she didn't like.
She was a devoted wife and homemaker and was exceptional at raising her two children. She cherished babysitting and spoiling her three granddaughters as it was always Christmas at her house. As they grew, Liz never missed a soccer, volleyball, basketball, and most importantly, a softball game, once taking a line drive off the top of her head, but certainly not leaving the game until it was over.
Prior to her stroke, Liz made her home with her son, making many new friends in the neighborhood and often providing them with lawn jobs. In 2019, following her stroke, Liz made her last home at the Assumption Village where she made many friends. She enjoyed the company of her caregivers and other residents and cherished the visits by her great-grandchildren, but only for about 15 minutes.
Liz's husband Frank, whom she was happily married to for 42 years, passed away on June 28, 1998. Elizabeth leaves her son, Dr. Frank (Michele) Yanek of North Lima; her daughter, Jody (Robert) Varady of Cleveland; granddaughters, Madison (Daryl) Kurtz of Columbiana, Darrian (Michael) Chiovitti of Canfield, and Caragyn (Wyatt) Young of Columbus; and three great-grandchildren, Frankie and Penelope Kurtz and Vittorio Chiovitti.
In addition to her parents and husband, Liz was preceded in death by three sisters, Genevieve Kozicki, Pauline Morgan, and Sophia Mudryk; and six brothers, John, Adolph "Pepper", Joseph, Anthony "Buddy", Stanley and Frank Mudryk. Liz was recently preceded in death by her childhood and lifelong friend, Tootsie Rivera, whose friendship she cherished.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, March 25, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Roman Catholic Church in Boardman.
Liz's family will receive friends Sunday, from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the Davis-Becker Funeral Home in Boardman, and Monday, from 10:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at the church. Interment will follow at the St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery, Lowellville, Ohio.
