North Lima - Eleanor R. Adams, 96, died early Thursday morning, November 3, 2011 at Assumption Village.
Mrs. Adams was born April 5, 1915 in Struthers, a daughter of Thomas and Estella Morgan Roberts.
Raised in Struthers, she was a 1933 graduate of Struthers High School. Mrs. Adams attended Youngstown College for one year and then received her teaching degree from Ohio University. She first worked as a teacher at Sexton Street Elementary School in Struthers for several years and then as a field director for the Girl Scouts in Wisconsin.
During World War II, she moved back to the Youngstown area and did social work for the American Red Cross, working as a case worker for Mahoning County. Mrs. Adams helped organize the Chapter of Grey Ladies, who helped in the hospitals during the war. She also worked as a social worker in the first tuberculosis hospital for three years and was a board member of the Tuberculosis and Health Association.
After the war, she returned to teaching and worked at Stadium Drive and Market Street Elementary in Boardman and then at Wickliffe-Davis Elementary. She worked up until her marriage to Earl "Walt" Adams on June 15, 1957. She did mostly volunteer work after her marriage.
Her and Walt eventually moved to California for his work for four years. After retirement, they made their home for twelve years in Lititz, PA, where they enjoyed golfing, the woods, hiking, and their flower gardens. In 1996, they returned to the Youngstown area.
Mrs. Adams was a member of the Struthers United Methodist Church and the Lititz Moravian Church.
Her husband, Walt, died May 5, 2009. She is survived by two sisters, Betty Sprague of Poland and Sally Metzler of Warren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Marian Hill and Isabella Weden.
A private graveside service was held at Firestone Cemetery in Columbiana.
