Canfield- Edwin Rowe Thompson, 99 died Wednesday morning at his residence.

Ed was born January 2, 1911 in Youngstown, a son of William and Mary Rowe Thompson.

His job was delivering milk from a horse drawn wagon, later working for Isaly Dairy.  He graduated from Chaney High School in 1928, attended Asbury College in Kentucky, transferred to Youngstown College and graduated from there in 1934.  He was believed to have been the oldest living graduate.  At Youngstown State he studied engineering under Dwight "Dike" Beede.  He used his engineering skills to work his way through college, with J. L. Adams, an inventor in Youngstown.

He later worked at the Youngstown Sheet and Tube and Canfield Manufacturing, where he was Vice President.  He founded two companies, Thompson Canfield Construction Company and Western Reserve Plastics.

Ed was a member of the Canfield United Methodist Church, Wick Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite, Al Koran Shrine, the Youngstown Shrine Club, Sigma Delta Beta, and Phi Sigma Kappa.  He was the first president of the Home Builders Association, and past president of the Rotary Club of Canfield.  He was also a member of the Mahoning Valley Professional Engineers, the Viking Club and the Youngstown Optimist Club.

He married his wife, the former Kathryn A. Hoover, known as "Kitten", May 29, 1936.  She died Nov. 5, 2008.  They had celebrated 73 years of marriage.

He leaves two daughters, Roberta (Thomas) Fabish of Export, Pennsylvania; Karen (Ken) Roth of Wooster, Ohio; two sons, Alan ( Cheryl) Thompson of Columbiana, Ohio; Dr. Jeffrey (Linda) Thompson of Orefield, Pennsylvania; 15 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

A brother, Frances and two sisters, Audrey Meyers and Kay Schultz are deceased.

Visitation will be from 1:00 to 3:00 PM Sunday at the Davis-Becker Funeral Home, 4996 Market St., Boardman, where a Memorial service will follow at 3:00 PM.

The family asks that material tributes be made in the form of contributions to the Youngstown Shrine Club's, Wheels of Mercy Foundation.  This foundation provides transportation to area children, to and from the Erie or Cincinnati Shrine Hospitals.  The foundation also provides wheel chairs, walkers and devices for these kids.  Send contributions to P.O.
