Poland - Edward E. Slagle, 98, formerly of New Middletown, died early Sunday morning, May 10, 2015 at Hampton Woods.
Mr. Slagle was born January 24, 1917 in Struthers, a son of Harry and Mary Klem Slagle.
A 1936 graduate of Poland Seminary High School, Mr. Slagle was in the Hall of Fame for Track, Baseball and Basketball and worked as a store manager for Stambaugh Thompsons, retiring in 1982 after 32 years of service.
Mr. Slagle was a United States Army veteran, serving in the 340th Battalion of the 89th Artillery Army Division during World War II. He served overseas for two years and fought in the Battle of the Bulge, receiving the Sharpshooter Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. Edward was a member of the VFW Post No. 2799 in New Springfield.
Mr. Slagle was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church of New Middletown and its Seniors Group, the Springfield Township Seniors, and the Saxon Club and its Seniors Group and Saxon Retirees.
Some of Edward's favorite things to do were bowling throughout the years in leagues at Camelot and the Holiday Bowl, playing cards with friends, and fishing the waters in Florida and Lake Erie in Ashtabula.
His wife, the former Helen Kauffman, whom he married September 9, 1941, preceded him in death on January 8, 2012. He is survived by a brother, David (Iris) Slagle of Louisiana; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Alfred and Bill Slagle and a sister, Alice Ducay.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church of New Middletown with Pastor Larry Klinker officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Boardman.
Family and friends will be received Tuesday (TODAY) from 5-7 p.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland and Wednesday from 10-10:45 a.m. at the church, prior to the service.
