New Springfield-Edward O'Hatnick, a retired plant manager of Mesta Machine Company, died at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center on Sunday, July 3 at the age of 96.
He was born in Scottdale, Pennsylvania, in 1914, a son of Jacob and Anna Dubiel O'Hatnick. His eight siblings, Mary O'Hatnick, Helen O'Hatnick Kiliany, Margaret O'Hatnick, Harry O'Hatnick, Ann O'Hatnick Ryan, Pauline O'Hatnick, Joseph O'Hatnick, and Elizabeth O'Hatnick Thomas preceded him in death.
In 1928, he moved to Youngstown, Ohio, where he graduated from Chaney High School and attended Youngstown State University, then known as Youngstown College, to study electrical engineering. He married Helen Louise Hanisko in 1942 and they lived for more than 50 years in Poland, Ohio. He worked for United Engineering and Foundry in Youngstown as an electrician and later worked for most of his career for Mesta Machine Company in New Castle, Pennsylvania, where he was chief electrician and assistant plant manager.
He was one of the founding members of Holy Family Parish in Poland, Ohio. He belonged to the Knights of Columbus and was also active in the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
Following his retirement from Mesta Machine Company, he and his wife enjoyed traveling to Europe and visiting the villages where his parents were born in Slovakia.
He enjoyed baseball games, whether as a participant when he was young or later as a spectator, and a friendly game of poker with friends and family. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were his pride and joy.
He is survived by three children, Robert (Suzanne) of Baltimore, Nancy (Terry) Brown of Cleveland, and Susan (Stephen) Shurilla of New Springfield. In addition, he had four grandchildren, Joannah O'Hatnick (Lewis Lukens), Jacob O'Hatnick, Scott (Misty) Brown, and Emily Shurilla, and three great grandchildren, Emilia and Alexander Lukens and Chase Brown. His wife died on May 21, 2001. Edward lived with his daughter, Susan, in New Springfield for the past seven years.
Family and friends will be received on Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland and Thursday from 9-9:45 a.m. at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in New Middletown.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church.
