Edward L. Pack

Edward L. Pack, 83 Poland- Edward Louis Pack, 83, known in his childhood as Chak, of 2530 Knollwood Ave. died Wednesday morning at his residence. He was born January 3, 1921 in Youngstown, a son of Michael and Anna Floch Pacek. He moved to Struthers in 1953. Mr. Pack had been a mathematics teacher in the Youngstown City School System at East, Rayen and Chaney High Schools. He then became a guidance counselor at Rayen School and Adams Junior High retiring in 1982 after 32 years.. A veteran of World War II, he was an Air Force First Lieutenant serving as a navigator on a B-17, bombing Berlin and other targets in Germany. His plane was shot down over the North Sea on the 24th mission. He survived three days on a raft before being rescued by the Germans. He then became a Prisoner of War for two years until the war was over. After his discharge he worked as a ticket agent on the Erie Railroad before attending college. Mr. Pack graduated from Youngstown Chaney High School in 1939. He graduated from Case Western Reserve University with a Bachelor of Science and received his teaching certificate from Youngstown College. He received a Masters Degree in Education and Guidance from Westminster College. He was a member of St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church and the Altar and Rosary Society, the AMVETS, the Disabled American Veterans, Buckeye State Chapter 8, Steel Valley POW Chapter 13 and was a life member of the Retired Teachers Association. He leaves his wife, the former Beverly Ann McRill whom he married November 21, 1953; two sons, Richard (Susan) Pack of Boardman and Joseph (Judith) Pack of Canton; three brothers, William Pack of Warren, Louis Pack and Victor Pacek of Youngstown and five grandchildren, Courtney, Lindsey, Aaron, Jared, and Ryan. He was preceded in death by a sister Bridget and a brother Dominic Pacek. Prayer Services will be Saturday at 10:00 AM at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, Poland and Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 at St. Nicholas Church in Struthers. Visitation will be Friday from 5 to 8 PM at the funeral home where the Steel Valley POW Chapter 13 will have a memorial service at 8 PM followed by a Bible Vigil by the Youngstown Cursillo.
