Poland - Edward R. Hallas, 98, of Poland, Ohio, died Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at the Ohio State Veteran's Home in Sandusky. Mr. Hallas was born August 4, 1910 in Youngstown, a son of Joseph and Irene Beck Hallas. He was raised in Struthers, and lived in Youngstown until moving to Poland in 1978. Mr. Hallas attended Struthers High School and worked as a heater for LTV for 39 years, retiring in 1973. He was a member of St. Patrick Church in Youngstown. Mr. Hallas was a United States Army Veteran serving as a Master Sergeant during World War II. Mr. Hallas was an avid boater, swimmer, and golfer and enjoyed going to his place at Lake Erie. Mr. Hallas was a lifelong member of the Red Brook Boat Club in Ashtabula and was a former member of the United States Power Squadron. His wife, the former Lillian Summers, whom he married June 28, 1941, died November 10, 2004. He leaves two sons, Howard (Suzie) Hallas of Poland and Robbie (Marty) Hallas of North Jackson; three grandchildren, Keith, Sara Hallas, and Bobby (Erin) Hallas; and one great-grandchild, Angelina Hallas. Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph and Francis Hallas. Funeral services will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick Church, 1420 Oak Hill Ave., Youngstown. received Friday from 9:15-10:15 a.m. prior to the service at the church.
