Poland - After 50 years of dairy delivery service, Edward R. Dupay, Sr. retired as owner and operator of Poland Dairy Delivery in 1997.
Ed, at the age of 87, died Monday morning at theVista Center at the Ridge in Mineral Ridge after a long courageous battle with Parkinson's.
He was born May 10, 1925 in Youngstown, a son of Martin and Emma Smotrila Dupay and lived his life in Poland.
A veteran of World War II, Ed left high school to enlist in the United States Navy in 1941 and served for two years in the Pacific. Returning to the area, Ed pursued his education on the GI Bill and completed his G.E.D. from South High School. He attended Kent State University and received his teaching certificate from Youngstown State University in 1951.
Ed was an excellent athlete. He played three years varsity baseball while at Poland and played three seasons while in the United States Navy. Ed continued to participate in the sport for eight years in local sandlots. Ed was also an avid bowler and was a member of the Poland Dairy Delivery League. Ed loved to dance polkas and was a member of the SNPJ Lodge in Enon Valley.
When Ed's name was mentioned in the athletic circles in the area, the first thing that comes to mind is tennis. Ed was a tennis pro and was considered a "top notch" player to come from this area. He competed individually and on the tournament circuit while serving as a tennis professional for over 20 years and won many trophies. He also taught tennis for 20 years at the Boardman Athletic and the Boardman Tennis Center, formerly known as the Youngstown Racquet Club. Ed was responsible for organizing the highly competitive local tennis league and he played a major part in the development of many young players including his children and seniors also. In 1992 he was inducted into the Curbstone Coaches Hall of Fame.
Ed leaves his wife of 58 years, the former Eleanor "Nora" Phillips, whom he married May 15, 1954; two daughters, Patricia (Robert) Staup of Scottsdale, AZ and Sandra Dupay of Youngstown; one son, Dr. Edward (Pamela) Dupay Jr.of Ft. Meyers, FL; two sisters, Lucille Blosco of East Palestine and Eleanor Carson of Poland; four grandchildren, Edward "Teddy" Dupay III, Abbey (Bobby) Morales, Eva and Olivia Dupay; and one great-granddaughter, Hannah Dupay.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, 10:00 AM at Holy Family Church in Poland with Msrg.William Connell officiating.
Friends will be received Friday from 9:00 AM until 9:45 AM at the church.
