Lowellville: Edward J. Barone, 91, passed away Sunday morning , August 25, 2019 at Hospice of the Valley's, Hospice House. He died peacefully surrounded by the love of his family.

Ed was born May 15, 1928 in Struthers, the son of the late Ralph and Rose (Morell) Barone.

He graduated from Struthers High School and studied journalism and communication at the Armed Forces Institute and then at Youngstown University.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he earned the World War II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal Japan.

Ed worked in broadcasting for various radio stations throughout his early career and began working at WFMJ Radio and TV in 1962. He would later become News Director and News Anchor at that station. Ed's career in communications would lead to one of his proudest accomplishments, his work as Jury Commissioner at the Mahoning County Courthouse, until his retirement in his late 70's.

During his career Ed also taught Current Events at Villa Marie High School, for two years and lectured in journalism, communications, advertising and public relations at several local universities. He was a Member of the Board of the Youngstown Society for the Blind and Disabled, Greater Youngstown Crime Stoppers, Consumer Credit Counseling Services, Upjohn Health Care Services, a trustee of F.O.O.D. Inc., and a member of the Rescue mission "Homeless Shelter's Capital Campaign Committee. During his career he won many awards and commendations including one for his coverage of the Stop 5 Riots in Youngstown.

Ed is survived by his three children, Edward J. Barone, Mark A. Barone and Constance "Connie" (Joe) Barone-Likens, all from Lowellville; 10 grandchildren, Edward, Rachel, Peter, Erich, Katie, Dawnella, Melinda, Chad, Bradley, and Matthew; 10 great grandchildren; a brother Frank Barone and a sister, Mary Ann Caccamo.

Besides his parents, Ed was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, the former Geraldine U Poleno who he married on April 26, 1954, died May 14, 1997: a daughter-in-law Alison "Jackie" Barone, and eight siblings, Vincent Barone, Clara Ferrara, Jenny DeLauder, Joseph Barone, Antoinette Tallerino, Alfred Barone, Peter Barone, Elvira Conti, .

Private funeral services were held on Thursday, August 29, 2019 at Davidson-Becker Funeral Home with Fr. John Jerek officiating.

There are no calling hours.
