Youngstown - Dr. Thomas Henry Backus, 92, of Park Vista, died late Tuesday evening at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Dr. Backus was born June 16, 1917 in Youngstown, a son of Thomas and Rose Kroll Backus. He lived in Youngstown and Poland until retiring to Carolina Trace in North Carolina in 1983. He returned to the Youngstown area in 2004.
A graduate of South High School, Dr. Backus completed his undergraduate work at the University of Colorado and the University of Toledo. He graduated from The Ohio State University in 1943 with a DDS Degree. In 1946 he established his private practice in Youngstown, on the corner of Warren and Market. He retired from his practice in 1983.
Serving in World War II, Dr. Backus was commissioned as Lieutenant in the United States Navy, serving in the dental clinic in Pearl Harbor and then in Japan on a mine sweeper.
Dr. Backus was a member of the Corydon-Palmer Dental Society, Ohio Dental Society, American Dental Society, PSI Omega Dental Fraternity and Alpha Tau Omega. He was past president of Downtown Kiwanis, and a board member of Goodwill Industries where he received honorary service. An avid bridge player, Dr. Backus belonged to various bridge clubs. In North Carolina he was a volunteer fireman and belonged to various golf groups. Besides bridge and golfing, Dr. Backus loved to work in his yard and tend to his rose garden. Dr. Backus was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Youngstown.
He leaves his wife, the former Nancy Miller whom he married September 11, 1943; two daughters, Joanne (James) Bryson of New Middletown and Rosemary (Robert) Himes of Corpus Christi, TX; one son, Thomas H (Georgia) Backus Jr. of Poland; five grandchildren, Celeste (Matthew) Bradshaw, Thomas H Backus III, Craig Alexander, Kristina Himes, Jamye Backus; and one great-grandchild, Thomas H. Backus IV.
Besides his parents, Dr. Backus was preceded in death by three brothers, Earl, William and Gilbert Backus.
Services will be held Saturday, 1:00 p.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, Poland, with Rev. Alan Hutchison officiating. A private interment will follow at the Poland Riverside Cemetery.
Friends will be received Saturday from 11:30 am until 12:45 pm at the funeral home.
