BOARDMAN-Richard "Dick" Stephen Richards, M.D., passed into eternal life on Monday morning, September 14, 2015, at age 81, thus making him the first member of his family to live past 70 years. He was preceded in death by his parents Stephen and Anna (O'Mellan) Richards and his eldest son Stephen John Richards.
Richard will be greatly missed by his loving and devoted wife of 54 years Charlotte (Blaemire) and their children Chrissie Ann (Dr. Thomas) Watson, Dr. Paul (Lori Murray) Richards and Dr. Richard (Rosanne Toti) Richards and seven grandchildren: Adam, Stephen and Christopher Watson, Lauren and Justin Richards, and Maria and Johnny Richards. He is also survived by his brother Michael (Mary Ann Baker) Richards.
Richard was born April 4, 1934 in Campbell, Ohio and graduated 2nd in his class from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1952. He continued his schooling on a football scholarship at Columbia University where he earned a Bachelor's of Arts degree. He fell in love with medicine and continued his education on another scholarship at The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, where he was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honors Medical Society and earned his Doctorate of Medicine degree in 1960. He passed his Ohio State Medical Boards with the 3rd highest grade. He interned from 1960-61 and in 1963 he completed his anesthesia residency from Youngstown Hospital Association.
After briefly working at Parma Community Hospital as a staff anesthesiologist, Richard returned to Youngstown as a staff anesthesiologist at St. Elizabeth's Hospital until 1968 when he became chairman of the anesthesia department, director of the school for nurse anesthetists and a national accreditation reviewer for nurse anesthetists. He held these positions from 1963-1985, as well as Vice President of the medical staff from 1973-1975.
When he retired from anesthesia, he became a medical administrator until 2000. Richard's final job in the medical profession was as a drug reviewer for the Bureau of Worker's Compensation until September 2014. In addition, he held medical licenses in California and Nevada. In addition to being a talented and well respected anesthesiologist, he will always be remembered for his bright smile, quick wit, sense of humor and practical jokes.
Even though his family and medicine were his life's loves, Richard had a passion for Big Band music. Richard and Charlotte would take a Big Band cruise every year and he would meet and interview the legends of the Big Band Era. Meeting those artists were some of his greatest experiences and he talked about them every chance he could. From his home music studio, he listened to countless hours of Big Band music every week, designing his 2-3 hour weekly Big Band radio show on WKTL, where he was known as "Doc Richards". A few of his favorite shows were his Valentine's show and the several weeks in November where he honored our country's veterans.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday at noon at the Davis-Becker Funeral Home, 8536 Market Street, Boardman, where family and friends will be received Wednesday from 10-11:45 a.m., prior to the service.
Memorial tributes may take the form of monetary contributions in Dr. Richards' name to The Assumption Village, 9800 Market St., North Lima, OH 44452.
