Gastonia, NC - Dr. Raymond Morris Lupse, 64, passed away Friday, June 5, 2009.
Ray was born in Youngstown August 23, 1944, a son of the late Dr. Raymond Simon Lupse and Martha Morris Lupse.
He graduated from Poland Seminary High School in 1962 and was a former member of the Poland United Methodist Church.
He received his Bachelor of Science in 1966 at Ohio University, Athens, OH. He then attended George Washington University where he earned his Master of Science in 1968, Master of Philosophy in 1972, and Doctor of Philosophy in 1973. He obtained his Doctor of Medicine in 1977 at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH.
Dr. Lupse published various papers during his residency at Emory University Affiliated Hospitals in Atlanta, GA, his fellowship at The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, and while serving on the faculty at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago, IL. He also completed pre-doctoral research at the University of Gottingen: Institute of Animal Genetics, Gottingen, Germany in 1970 and doctoral research at Agricultural Research Council, Unit of Reproductive Physiology and Biochemistry, Cambridge, England in 1972-1973. Throughout his career he served on numerous committees both as a professional and as a community leader.
Dr. Lupse was in private practice in Gastonia, NC, serving patients in Gynecology, Gynecologic Surgery, and Gynecologic Oncology Surgery from 1988-2008 and was a member of active staff at Gaston Memorial Hospital during that period. He was proud to be elected Chief of Staff and a member of the Board of Directors from 1999-2001. In 2009, he was also elected to the Emeritus Medical Staff and Honorary Staff, a designation for physicians of outstanding reputation. Although he had retired from his medical practice last summer, he spent the last several months serving patients at the Cleveland County Health Department in Shelby, NC.
Ray avidly enjoyed fly fishing, boating and photography and was a long-time member of the Rockwell Springs Trout Club and the Duquesne Hunting and Fishing Club. Starting in childhood and throughout his married life, his most memorable family vacations were spent at Lake Chautauqua, NY.
Ray is survived by his wife, the former Judith Carol Weaver, whom he married January 6, 1979; his daughter, Ashleigh of New York; his son, Raymond, Jr. of Gastonia; and his sister, Linda Lupse of Youngstown.
A memorial service was held in Gastonia, NC, at the First United Methodist Church on Sunday, June 7, and the family received friends following the service. Ray's wife, Judy, will receive friends from 1-3 p.m. on Thursday, July 2, at Dr. Lupse's childhood family residence, which is now the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, 270 N. Main Street in Poland, OH.
