A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, July 3, 2012, at 10 a.m. at the Christ Our Savior (Holy Trinity) Parish, Struthers, Ohio for Dr. Philip Ginnetti, 61. Dr. Ginnetti passed away peacefully on Friday, June 29, 2012, at the Cleveland Clinic from acute myeloid leukemia.
Phil was born June 3, 1951 in Youngstown, Ohio the son of Irene and the late Herman Ginnetti.
Phil was a 1969 graduate of Struthers High School, earned both a bachelor's degree and master's degree in elementary education from Youngstown State University, and a doctorate in elementary education curriculum from the University of Akron. He also attended the Pope John XXII National Seminary in 1980-81, in Weston, Massachusetts.
A lifelong educator in the Youngstown area, Phil began his career as a sixth grade teacher in the Girard city school system. He then became Principal of the Lordstown Elementary school. While working in the Lordstown schools, he began his teaching career as an adjunct faculty member at Youngstown State University in the school of education. Throughout his 25 years with YSU he held several positions at the institution, including chairperson of the Department of Teacher Education and Assistant Dean of the Beeghly College of Education before being named the dean of the College in 2002. During his time as Dean, he developed a strong record of achievement in curriculum development, increased grant awards in the College and established a process used by the University to recruit and hire diverse faculty and staff. He was also instrumental in the development of a school psychologist program, revamped the teacher education Master's degree programs, and spearheaded the reaccreditation of the departments by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. In addition to his many publications, he was also active in public presentations and lectures.
In 2010, Dr. Ginnetti became Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Edinboro University. In the short two years at Edinboro University, Phil established a School of Business, created a Chairs' Development Committee, garnered a $100,000 donation for the Honors Program, to name just a few. In the words of some of his colleagues at Edinboro, he has "touched the lives of many students and faculty and will always be remembered as an incredible academic leader, a joyful person, and a great friend to many on campus." He was known for his contagious energy and commitment to education.
Most recently, Phil was awarded the Outstanding Alumni award from Youngstown State University for his distinguished service to the university.
Phil was an active member of the Christ Our Savior (St. Nicholas) Parish in Struthers, Ohio, where he was a Eucharistic Minister and reader.
For everyone that knew Phil, he will be fondly remembered for his love of cooking and for his amazing Christmas decorating. He also enjoyed playing Bingo with his Mom at the church. His passion for family and holidays, along with his encouraging personality and his dedication to the field of education will be forever remembered. Phil was the epitome of a scholar, educator and family oriented person.
Phil will be sadly missed by his partner, Albert Celec, of Boardman, his mother, Irene Ginnetti of Struthers, his sisters, Linda Ginnetti and Irene (Joel) Lariccia both of Struthers, brothers, Dan (Maria) of Poland, Patrick (Missy) of Struthers, Richard of Pittsburgh and Michael of Struthers. He also had three nieces, Nicole Lariccia, Alexa Morocco and Laiken Percic; seven nephews Joel, Dominic and Anthony Lariccia, Joshua, Justin and Gino Ginnetti, and Frank Percic. He also left behind his beloved dogs, Andre, Giorgio and Winslow. He was preceded in death by his father, Herman, and a brother David.
Calling hours for friends and family will be held Monday afternoon, July 2, 2012, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, 270 North Main Street in Poland, OH 44514. A prayer service will be held at 9:15am on Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at the funeral home prior to the church services.
