Dr. Paul D. Van Zandt POLAND âa�" Dr. Paul D. Van Zandt, 80, of Poland, OH, died in Carrollton, GA (his winter home) at 10:45 a.m. on Tuesday, February 19, following a brief illness. Dr. Van Zandt was born on December 29, 1927 in Vandalia, IL, the son of Clem and Margaret Cockelreas Van Zandt. Dr. Van Zandt attended Vandalia schools and graduated from Vandalia High School. He attended the University of Illinois where he marched in the University of Illinois Marching Band. Dr. Van Zandt earned a Bachelorâa�a��s Degree from Greenville College in Greenville, IL, a Masterâa�a��s Degree in Zoology from the University of Illinois and a Masterâa�a��s Degree in Science and Public Health from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He also earned a Doctorate of Philosophy in Parasitology from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and completed one year of Post-Doc work at the University of North Carolina. Dr. Van Zandt was on the faculty in the Biological Sciences Department at Youngstown State University for 30 years, serving 21 years as Department Chairman. Dr. Van Zandt was an accomplished musician and was the #1 snare drummer in the state of Illinois his senior year in high school. He played in several local dance bands in Illinois, and supper clubs and radio groups in North Carolina. He also traveled with a Big Band in the South West before beginning his teaching career. Dr. Van Zandt was a lover of music his entire life, particularly jazz, and he owned every album published by the famous jazz musician Stan Kenton. Dr. Van Zandt served with the Military Police in the Marine Corps, was in the Marine Corps Reserve, and a member of the Marine Corps League of Youngstown, OH. Dr. Van Zandt was a 48-year member of the First Presbyterian Church of Youngstown where he served as Deacon and Elder. For the past 16 years, he also attended the First Presbyterian Church of Anniston, AL during their winter months in the South. Dr. Van Zandt was preceded in death by his parents; and his twin grandsons, Michael and Matthew McBride. He leaves behind his adoring wife of 53 years, Sue Schutz Van Zandt; his daughter and son-in-law, Jill and M. Scott McBride; a granddaughter, Molly McBride; brothers-in-law, Bill (Eileen) Schutz of Pekin, IL and George Schutz of Des Moines, WA; and six nieces and one nephew. Funeral services will take place at the First Presbyterian Church of Youngstown, on Wick Ave., on Tuesday, February 26th at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Nick Mager officiating. The family will receive friends in the church parlor one hour prior to the service. Dr. Van Zandt will be laid to rest in Poland Cemetery following the service.
