Boardman - Dr. Jean M. Muransky, 48, passed away at her step-mother, JoAnne's home, August 6, 2016 surrounded by her family.
Jean was born June 10, 1968 in Youngstown, a daughter of John "Jack" and Duira "Dee" Dickson Muransky.
Raised in East Palestine, Jean was a 1986 graduate of East Palestine High School. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Muskingum College in 1990, her Master's degree from Illinois State in 1996, and her Doctorate from Ohio State University in 2000.
An Education Program Specialist for the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Washington D. C., Jean was active in developing programs in education for prisoners. Prior to her position in Washington, Jean was head of the education department for Elkton Federal Prison. Jean's passion was her work. She believed in furthering the education of prisoners by working hands on with them, helping them to achieve their G.E.D., so that they too had a better chance at securing job opportunities and contribute as a good law abiding citizen of the United States once they were released from prison.
When not advocating for prisoners' education, Jean threw herself into helping people with mental/physical challenges. She was a 25 year volunteer for the Special Olympics, and since her diagnosis with ovarian cancer, volunteered for the Rose Mary Flanagan Ovarian Cancer Foundation.
Jean enjoyed traveling with family, water skiing and roller skating and was the 2006 United States Novice Figure Skating Champion. As would an educator, Jean was a voracious reader and in her collection of books were her favorite subjects, Van Gogh and sunflowers. Jean loved rooting for her beloved Buckeyes and she was a MAJOR fan of Nascar and Kyle Bush.
Jean's mother, Dee McFarland, preceded her in death in January of 2016; She leaves her father, Jack of Boardman; step-mother, JoAnne Muransky also of Boardman; two brothers, David John Muransky of Ellsworth and Mark David Muransky of Lakewood; two nieces, Serena and Sidney Muransky both of East Palestine; and numerous cousins, aunts, and uncles.
A celebration of her life will be held Wednesday at 11:00 AM at the Davis-Becker Funeral Home, 8536 Market Street, Boardman with Pastor Gary Schreckenghost officiating. Interment will follow at the Lake Park Cemetery in Youngstown.
Friends and family will be received Tuesday from 4-7 PM and Wednesday from 10:15-10:45AM at the funeral home.
