Herbert Louis Queen, 80, of Boardman formerly of Poland, died Sunday morning at Hampton Woods.
Dr. Queen was born March 4, 1932 in Struthers, a son of Arnold and Toye Simpson Queen. He was raised in Struthers and later resided in Poland.
He graduated from Struthers High School in 1950 before going on to get his chemistry degree at New York's Houghton College and his Medical Doctorate at Ohio State University. Education was important to Dr. Queen and he showed this by serving as a trustee for Canton's Malone College for several years and through his extensive collection of antique books.
After medical school Dr. Queen practiced for eight years as an anesthesiologist in Findlay, Ohio before returning to the Youngstown area. While here he had his own family practice in Poland before Multiple Sclerosis ended his medical career after a 21 year turn as an emergency room physician at both Northside and Southside Hospitals in 1989. His uncomplaining handling of this disease was an inspiration to all of his friends and family.
Until recent years when his mobility was limited, he was an active member of Bethel Friends Church in Poland where he served as a past Sunday School teacher and often sang duets with his wife. Dr. Queen will be missed by his wife the former Virginia E. Bartholomew, whom he married September 26, 1959; four daughters, Julie (John) Wilcox of Canfield, Dr. Heather (Michael) Queen-Williams of Copley, Amy (Leiv) Bue of Middleburg Hts., and Holly Queen of Middleburg Hts, OH; two sons, Jonathan (Carla) Queen of New Middletown and Stephen (Beth) Queen of Poland; two sisters, Evelyn Queen of Columbiana and Ruth Perry of East Rochester; two brothers, Chester Queen of North Lima and Robert (Barbara) Queen of Boardman; and eight grandchildren, Lilly Winger, Chloe and Madeleine Queen, Anna Bue, Ian and Evan Daugherty, Virginia Williams, and Michelle Queen.
Besides his parents, Dr. Queen was preceded in death by two brothers, Arnold and Harold Queen.
Dr. Queen's family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the wonderful care provided by the staff at Hampton Woods.
A Memorial Service will be held Friday, 3:00 PM, at the Bethel Friends Church in Poland with Pastor Bobby Murphy officiating. Friends may call Friday from 1:30 PM until 3:00 PM at the church.
