Dr. Dolores "Dee" Snyder

Boardman - Dolores A. Snyder, 84, died unexpectedly Monday morning, November 27, 2017.

Dolores "Dee" was born on March 30, 1933 in Youngstown, OH, a daughter of the late Leo and Muriel (Sweeney) Bair.

She was a 1951 graduate of Boardman High School, received a bachelor’s degree in education from Miami University, Ohio in 1954, a master’s degree in education and reading from Westminster College, Pennsylvania in 1966 and a doctorate of education from The University of Akron in 1986.

Dee began her career in education with the Boardman Local Schools in 1954 as an elementary teacher at West Boulevard. She progressed to intermediate and junior high school special education to teacher coordinator of special education and finally supervisor of special education (grades 1-12) and work study coordinator (grades 9-12) with the Boardman Local Schools and Mahoning County. She also taught for three years (1963-66) with Wilmington Area Schools in Pennsylvania. In 1973, she began teaching at Youngstown State University and then served as an Adjunct Faculty Member in the School of Education until 2008.

An active professional, Dr. Snyder was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, Kappa Delta Pi and Pi Lambda Theta, all education honorary organizations, The National and State Councils for Exceptional Children, the National Association of Autistic Children and Ohio Association for Supervisors and Work Study Coordinators. She was initiated into Delta Kappa Gamma a professional society for women educators on May 11, 1970.

She joined P.E.O. Ohio Chapter CE and was initiated November 18, 2009 and served as the Guard from 2011-2016. P.E.O. is a philanthropic organization where women celebrate the advancement of women and educate women through scholarships, grants, awards and loans.

She was a member of the Parkview Counseling Board of Trustees serving as President, Vice-President and as a member of the Planning & Evaluation Committee. She was a member of the Friends of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County. This is a group of volunteers who give of their time and efforts in support of the Library, where Dee served as President for 10 years retiring in 2015. She was a lifetime member of the Mahoning County Retired Teachers. Dee and her late husband Phil were instrumental in the formation of the Masonic Learning Center for Children with Dyslexia.

She was initiated into Alpha Chi Omega, Beta Tau Chapter at Miami University and later was an active member of the Omega Omega Chapter and served as the alumnae chapter president on several occasions. She was an active member of Bethel Lutheran Church and sang in the church choir, taught Sunday school as well as serving as Sunday school superintendent. Dee enjoyed traveling, reading, crossword puzzles, golfing, volunteering and spending time with her family and friends.

Her husband, Philip A. Snyder, whom she married on August 18, 1956, preceded her in death on May 8, 2009. She is survived by her children, Karen Marchese (Robert) of Warren, Karla Snyder Beauchamp of Boardman and Kurt Snyder (Melissa) of Cleveland; her grandchildren, Philip W. Snyder of Boardman, Kristine N. Colwell (Dennis) of Foxborough, MA and Cheryl N. Snyder of Boardman; her great granddaughter, Charlie Rose Colwell; and her sister, Diane Pierce (Jack) of Houston, TX.

In addition to her parents and husband, Dee was preceded in death by her brother, Arthur Bair.

A memorial service will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. at Bethel Lutheran Church, 425 Crestview Dr., Boardman, with Pastor Richard Kidd officiating. Entombment will be at Lake Park Cemetery.

Family and friends will be received on Thursday from 4-8 p.m. at the Davis-Becker Funeral Home, 8536 Market St., Boardman and on Friday from 10-10:45 a.m. at the church, prior to the service.
