Dr. Daniel Neill Ebert

POLAND-Dr. Daniel Neill Ebert, Veterinarian, passed away on December 10, 2013 after a lengthy battle against Leukemia.

He was born on October 13, 1935 to parents, Marion (Corcoran) and Neill William Ebert of Norwalk, Ohio.

He is survived by his brothers, James (Connie), Patrick (Pia), Michael (Penny), and sister, Mary Ellen (David) Adams.

He is also survived by his wife, Ruth, of 52 years; his four sons, Dr. Steven Ebert, Ph.D. (Svetlana Strohm, Ph.D.) of Chuluota, Florida, Dr. Dean Ebert, D.V.M. of Nokomis, Florida, Dr. Daniel Ebert, M.D. (Mary Nye) of Poland, Ohio, and Mr. Scott Ebert (Sherrie Shupe) of Sandusky, Ohio; and 11 grandchildren.

Dr. Ebert graduated from Colorado State University in 1957 in undergraduate studies on a combined Basketball and Golf Scholarship. He earned his Doctor of Veterinarian Medicine from Ohio State University in 1961. Dr. Ebert and his wife, Ruth, started their small animal practice on Southern Boulevard in 1965 following a tour of duty as a Captain in the United States Air Force Veterinary Corps.

Dr. Ebert was an avid golfer, including 4 "Hole in Ones." He was on the Board of Directors for YDGA and YMCA Golf League. He is also a member of Tippecanoe Country Club. He was the Commissioner of Mahoning Valley Conference responsible for hiring basketball and football officials.

He was a past President of Poland School Board of Education serving 8 years.

Dr. Ebert was a loyal Ohio State University Alumnus, including being a member of the O.S.U. President's Club.

Dr. Ebert was also an enthusiastic fisherman. He rescued a family of five from a capsized boat on September 25, 1992 while he was on a fishing excursion in the middle of Lake Erie.

A prayer service will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, 270 N. Main St. in Poland, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church in Poland, where the Ebert family has been faithful members since 1971. Interment will follow at Poland Riverside Cemetery.

Family and friends will be received Friday from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be sent in memory of Dr. Ebert to The Hope Center for Cancer Care, 835 Southwestern Run, Poland, Ohio 44514.
