Douglas R. K. Everett

Youngstown - Douglas R. K. Everett, 90, died Wednesday morning, July 12, 2017 at Hospice of the Valley's Hospice House, surrounded by his family.

Douglas was born April 13, 1927 in Indiana, PA, a son John W. and Ruth Genevieve (Kline) Everett.

Raised in Indiana, PA, he was a 1945 graduate of Indiana High School, where he attended Laboratory School at Indiana State Teacher's College, PA during high school. In 1942, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps Cadet Program and was called into basic training in the fall of 1944 through early graduation. Mr. Everett served during World War II and was stationed in Guam until his honorable discharge in October of 1946.

After his discharge, Doug enrolled in the Case School of Applied Sciences in Cleveland under the GI Bill, and received his degree in Civil Engineering. His first job was with the PA Turnpike, Western Extension, as a soils engineer and he then moved to Youngstown in 1952 when he began working for Edward J. DeBartolo Corp. as a general superintendent for the building of shopping plazas. He also worked for Hubbard Estates as a construction superintendent for site development of 200 homes at 8 locations and United Construction as a general manager for multi-family developments, GM assembly plants, and shopping centers.

In 1974, Mr. Everett founded Aberdeen Construction Company, which he operated for 34 years, until his retirement in 2009. He completed numerous projects for banks, schools, fire stations, and office buildings, including many at Butler Art Institute and YSU.

A devout Christian man, Mr. Everett was a 63 year member at Pleasant Grove Presbyterian Church and recently Canfield Presbyterian Church. At Pleasant Grove Presbyterian Church, he was the Youth Choir Director for 8 years, Adult Choir Director for 34 years, member of session as a deacon and elder, and a Sunday School teacher and men's group leader. He also lead the Fast-Pitch softball team for many years, volunteered at the Joseph Badger Meadows Presbyterian Church Camp, and was a former moderator of the Eastminister Presbytery. Mr. Everett was recognized as the Protestant Man of the Year by the OPM (Organization of Protestant Men). Doug founded and directed OPM chorus and sang at Stambaugh Auditorium for guest speaker Norman Vincent Peale. Mr. Everett was also a Gideon International member who passed out thousands of bibles to students, hotels, and Canfield Fair-goers.

Mr. Everett was very active in serving his community throughout the years. He was past president of Park Vista Board of Directors, served on the Youngstown Board of Health, was past president and a member of the Youngstown Playhouse Board of Directors, and received the Special Recognition Award from the National Society of Fund Raising Executives.

A 57 year life member of Kiwanis International, Mr. Everett served through the Mill Creek and Downtown clubs. He served as Club President, Lt. Governor, and Ohio District Governor. As Sergeant at Arms, he escorted President Ronald Reagan to the stage for his address to Kiwanis International Convention. Doug was also involved with Mill Creek Baseball Little League, helping found it and umpiring for many years.

He is survived by his wife, the former Joan W. Crytzer, whom he married June 12, 1954 at Pleasant Grove Presbyterian Church; four children, Douglas D. (Barbara) Everett of Columbiana, Ruth Anne (Frank) Tarantine of Youngstown, David D. (Patricia) Everett of Canfield, and Kathy J. (John) Emrich of Boardman; six grandchildren, David (Jennifer) Everett, Ryan (Erica) Everett, John (Julie) Emrich, Kevin Emrich, Joseph Tarantine, and Emily Tarantine; six great-grandchildren, David aka "D3", Michael, and Zachary Everett, and Jack, Lucy, and Nora Emrich; sister-in-law, Mary Everett of Clinton Township, MI; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jack and Georgia Crytzer of Riviera Beach, FL; and a host of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Doug was preceded in death by his brothers, Donald F. Everett and Edwin A. Everett and wife, Gladys.

Family and friends will be received on Friday from 4-7 p.m. and Saturday from 10-10:45 a.m. at the Davis-Becker Funeral Home, 8536 Market St., Boardman, where a funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Larry Bowald officiating. Interment will follow at Lake Park Cemetery.
