Dorothy Zickar, 88
WAYNESVILLE - Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Charles Catholic Church in Boardman for Dorothy Zickar, formerly of Boardman. She passed away Monday morning in Waynesville.
Mrs. Zickar was born Sept. 5, 1922, in Ruffsdale, Pa., a daughter of Michael and Mary Sohonage Lovas.
She attended Campbell Memorial High School, where she served on the student council, was elected secretary of the National Honor Society, and was voted "Most Likely to Succeed."
After graduation, she took a job at McKelvey's Department Store, where she became a buyer of better women's clothes and traveled frequently on buying trips to New York City.
She and her husband, Lou, met at the McKelvey's lunch counter and were married at St. Anthony's Church in Sharon, Pa. on June 5, 1955. Together, they had three children.
Mrs. Zickar was a member of St. Charles Church in Boardman, and was active in school functions, Little League, and other activities involving her children. She was an active observer of current affairs, and volunteered for many years at the polls on Election Day. She was also an excellent cook and loved to bake.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lou, who passed away eight days earlier on Dec. 26, 2010, and her son, John, who passed away on Dec. 5, 2007. Besides her parents, a sister, Helen Schneider; and a brother, George Lovas, also preceded her in death.
Survivors include her daughter, Mary (Phil) Bogan of Centerville; her son, Lou (Lisa) Zickar of Alexandria, Va.; a sister, Mary Evelyn Grcevich of Boardman; and five grandchildren, Allie, Sam, Paul, Emily and Betsy.
Friends may call Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Davis-Becker Funeral Home in Boardman and on Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. at St. Charles Church.
In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Zickar's family requests that contributions be made in her honor to Crossroads Hospice Charitable Foundation, 8069 Washington Village Drive, Dayton, OH 45458.
